PC Linux OS 2007

Well I have been testing this distribution for quite some time.
All seems to be good so far. I have tested in both a Desktop and a Laptop environment. Under both enviroments installation was a breeze. RPM compatability is good and and system operation speed is more than adequate.

The only downside I can find is the amount of ram that the system uses. Athough it is not a negative issue. As it does not seem to affect system speed. But KDE is a ram hog but it has been explained that it is using most of the ram in a positive fashion. Keeping things alive in ram speeds the system so they say. And possibly a backwards Kernel running 2..18.8 instead of the 2.20.0 like Ubuntu. Which cuts one of my webcams from working as I need at least a 2.19.0 kernel to get it to run.

My Desktop is a Dell Dimension 8400 and it seems to have found and installed all the hardware.

My Laptop is a Dell Inspiron 640m everything installed perfectly the only issues i had was the wifi connectionwhich was easily remidied through the use of NDISWRAPPER.

So all in al I am quite pleased with the OS on both of my systems for now. Untill something new comes about.

PC Linux OS 2007

So I installed PCLinuxOS 2007
What a revelation this has turned out to be. Everything works out from the launch.
Beryl, Latest Video Drivers, etc...
The only glitch I have run into is a problem with the Mic. But it is a Problem with the ALSA project and not so much a problem with the PCLinuxOS.

So to resolve this I guess I am stuck to buy a new sound card for this box.
What a small dividend to pay for such a great OS.

Good News !

There is nothing more anoying than trying to edit pages direct in a site. Well I found if you install the W32 version of Filezilla with wine. That you can also set the default editor with context ( also another w32 application )

Its probably not the best idea to do large file changes in this fashion as you do not have a back up file to go back to. But to make minor code tweaks it works perfectly.

My usual method of work is to download before editing. Then edit direct on site. This way you can see your results instantly. And if something goes wrong. Well you can just re-upload the original file.

Seeing as this was my way of working under a blows environment. Porting this to a linux environment was my ideal solution !

ConTEXT Under Linux !!

So i finally started screwing around today with incorperating as many programs that I did enjoy that were opensource, yet were not binary releases. I guess you call it prodding under Wine for that which works and that which does not work well or at all.

I was happy to find that ConTEXT, one of my favorite script editors works like a charm.

Its not that Linux does not support a multitude of editors for taking care of these tasks. But rather over the years I have grown accustomed to this particular editor.

Glad that it is working in Nix ...
It also Incorperates well as a default editor in FileZilla. Thus no need to download files for editing when they can be editied direct onsite. ( Although Back ups are recommended for avoiding scripting hassels !! )

Try it for yourself !! Click on the name here ConTEXT

The AMSN Adventure !!

Finally a circumvention for direct file transfer between MSN Mess. and a Linux machine that works !! I have been a gaim user for so long. But the biggest downfall of the Proggy was the less that compatible file transfer with windows machines. But !! AMSN has done the job perfectly. So for anyone running Nix flava OS. I suggest AMSN as your messenger service for connectivity with MSN contacts.

http://amsn-project.net/index.php

Ubuntu - Kubuntu - Xubuntu

So i installed ubuntu like with ease. But..... I am having issues with the mic. This seems to be the only issue. Also changing over to KDE front end is less than 100 %. Forutunatly Ubuntu also has developed Kubuntu.. Ubuntu with a prefab KDE front end instead of the Gnome front end. So i am downloading and install image for a reinstallation. Trial and error but. For sure this is the way to find just the right user end to suit my needs. I do reccomend this version of linux to anyone wishing to try linux. It is simply that easy. So for now that is my report on the quest of a linux version for my Dimension 8400.

Look at the time of my last post. It was prior to flushing Gentoo. So i had to format old system install the new system. Its done 6 clicks to install land all is working appropriately . Although be it in GNOME and i am a KDE fan. But... Now the real deal begins. Graphics and sound are A1 so now it simply installing Appz and KDE. But ease of use. Perfect. So far i recoimmend this flavour for anyone wishing for simplicity in installation !!!!

Well gentoo installation was less than desirable from the GUI. So i was forced to do a command line install. It installed correctly but had problems with my sound drivers and video drivers were less than desirable. So off to wipe it again this time Ubuntu, The live cd loads appropriate sound and video drivers. Peraps this will be my flavour. Testing to begin !!!
Submitted by chucky
